Golden Sand Finds

A child’s collection of shells, arranged at the water’s edge.

Media: Mixed media/plexiglass etching, oil inks, assemblage (shells)

Dimensions: image 8” x 5”; framed 13” x 10”

Background story: As a child, I was fascinated by ocean seashells that found their way into my hands. They were a promise of oceans and exotic beaches I was sure I would someday visit. I still have a small, boxed collection of shells all neatly labelled. After a round of my anxious begging in a Seattle souvenir shop, my parents bought it for me as a memento of my first sight of the ocean.

Collecting shells (and rocks) is part of who I am.  When I walk the beach here, I enjoy searching for treasures to take home for my collection or to use in my shell painting classes.

This piece is symbolic of the simple childhood glee and wonder that comes from hunting at the water’s edge for the perfect shells.  Like my little box of shells, they have been carefully arranged.

Small shells have been added to this piece to represent the ocean’s role in carrying shells to the shore.

Amelia Island: There are shells to be found everywhere on our island—up and down the beach, in the surf, in pools at low tide, and in the marsh and on the riverfront. The best shelling, I am told, is at the top of the island around Fort Clinch and where the Intercoastal Waterway meets the ocean there. (Shark tooth hunting is also a favorite hobby and pastime for many here as well.)

Nature Facts: The best time, in general, to search for shell “keepers” is at low tide, or after a storm. The hour on both sides of low tide are the very best times.

Location: This artwork is currently on display at the Plantation Artists Guild and Gallery located at the Omni Spa and Shops of Amelia Island Plantation (94 Amelia Village Circle).
