Her Spirit Soars (earth tones)

This piece depicts a woman’s spirit set free to soar.

Mixed: Intaglio etching, acrylic, colored pencil

Dimensions: Image 15"x 11".  Framed 24"x19.5

Background story: The feeling I get from a hot air balloon ride is the inspiration for this piece. The expansive use of open space is the place where one can release regrets, difficult experiences, and emotional baggage as you peacefully rise into the future.

I’ve ridden in a number of hot air balloons. For my husband and my retirement gift to each other, we went round the world in a private jet to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites. One of the stops was in Tanzania where we took a glorious hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Many decades before that as a professional marketer, I hired hot air balloonists. At one festival I ran, people could line up to take a balloon ride; for a figure skating ice show I marketed, the balloon sported a gigantic banner advertising the event as it sailed for hours over local communities. Of course, I got a ride in both balloons.

Amelia Island: I am overjoyed with the beautiful, expansive sky over the Atlantic Ocean and the river marshes here. And birds are everywhere here. soaring, diving, feeding, nesting, resting on the sand, in the forests and the water.

Nature Facts: Amelia Island has been noted as one of the best places in the United States to see a variety of birds both permanently living here and stopping by during migration. There are over 470 species of birds that live here at different times of the year. Three of the top one hundred Florida Bird hotspots are here: Fort Clinch, Big Talbot State Park/Spoonbill Pond, and Little Talbot State Park.

Intaglio Etching (primary media): This is an ancient art form used by famous artists such as Albrecht Durer and Francisco Goya in centuries past. The intaglio printmaking technique carves lines into a metal plate using hand-held cutting tools and acid’s corrosive effects repeatedly to create a dimensional image. The artist applies inks to the plate, presses damp paper into the image by hand rolling it through a press, and pulls paper off the plate to create a series of artist’s proofs (A/P). Once the artist approves of the image, a signed and numbered, hand-pulled, limited edition of prints is the result. Since other media have been added to the base print, this makes it a one-of-a-kind original.
