Mermaid Triplets
 
Three sisters play beneath the waves.

Background story: “The Little Mermaid” of recent fame has nothing over on the “The Little Sea Maid” the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen that my mother read to me as a child. I often drew the mermaid back then. Fast forward to adulthood, my eye caught the butterfly tail of one of my pond goldfish sticking out from under a lily pad. That was it. I started drawing her again, but this time I added two more “goldies” to this piece—playing together like my fish do.
Amelia Island: For centuries, mariners claimed to see mermaids frolicking in the sea. The mermaids in reality were manatees. While there are no “real” mermaids swimming around the island’s waterways, it is common to see manatees during the spring through late fall here.
Mermaid Lore: Mermaids appear in the folklore of cultures worldwide, including Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. In these cultures, they are associated with perilous events such as shipwrecks and drownings, benevolent acts, or tales of falling in love with humans. In European folklore, mermaids (sometimes called sirens) were natural beings who, like fairies, had magical and prophetic powers. They loved music and often sang.
Mixed media: To get the effect I wanted, my drawing started on canvas with acrylic paint. Next, I used a very fine-point pen for a few details, followed by rolling colored ink on stamps and stencils to press onto the canvas to create seaweed dimension and tiny fish.
 
Brief Artist’s Background: Marcia enjoys using a wide variety of media to celebrate nature. She is an artist, illustrator and author who has exhibited at many galleries, juried art fairs, and salon shows. She has received numerous awards and has pieces in private collections across the globe. She has two art-related degrees: a Master of Fine Art and a bachelor’s in education with an art studio minor.
 
Location: This artwork is currently on display at the Plantation Artists Guild and Gallery located at the Omni Spa and Shops of Amelia Island Plantation (94 Amelia Village Circle).
