Background story: Under the water is such a magical place full of so much life. People are inquisitive and fascinated about this quiet place and its inhabitants. I am no exception.
Amelia Island: When I first moved to the island, I was surprised to learn that sea turtles nested here. They are one of the most remarkable sights you can experience along our beach.
Nature Facts: Five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world visit the island, but only a three—loggerhead, green and leatherback—commonly nest here. Nesting season typically runs from May through October. During this time, female turtles come ashore at night to lay eggs in the sand. About two months later, hatchlings emerge and make their way to the ocean.
Mixed media: To get the effect I wanted, my drawing started on canvas with acrylic paint. Next, I used a very fine-point pen for a few details, followed by rolling colored ink on stamps and stencils to press onto the canvas for texture.
